Journal #7

For this journal entry, I decided to make a gun out of cigarettes to help illustrate the fact that cigarrettes are just as dangerous as guns. I think it gets the message across really well, especially for not utilizing type or any other type of graphic. I think this image would work really well if it was done in photoshop with real cigarettes; however, since you required it to be illustrated by hand I did my best to draw it.

1. This is a picture of a burger king cup, but the symbols on the top and bottom are what I was trying to focus on. The symbols are of cups with a line next to them. They're supposed to symbolize how high to fill the cup with ice, and how high to fill it with liquid for the best ice/beverage ratio. I like the idea; however, I could barely tell the first cup was supposed to be filled with ice and didn't know that until I asked someone who works there. All in all, good concept, could of used some better execution when it came to the designing front though.

2-7. These symbols are in a diagram I have in my room showing important information in the home community. I'm glad they put the words describing the symbols to the right of the symbol because otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell what they were with the exception of the fire extinguisher. However the point of the symbols is to point out important emergency information on the map that isn't pictured in my picture.
8. This photo is on the back of a can of febreeze. What I was trying to focus on was the Recycle symbol which is three arrows all pointing at one another. I like this symbol because it shows an endless cycle and that is essentially the point of recycling. All in all I think the designer of this symbol did an amazing job.

9. This symbol is obviously of the Sprite logo; however,  I was trying to focus  on the lemon/lime fusion. The designer obviously chose to show the fusing of a lemon and a lime to express the flavor of sprite (lemon-lime) On top of just the basic concept, I think the designer made it look really sleek, cool, while still maintaining the simplicity of the symbol.

10. This picture is of a guitar pick because guitar picks symbolize guitars. Although they're also associated with bass guitars, most people just think of guitars.

11. This is obviously a picture of my passport, but what I was trying to bring focus to was the Eagle holding the olive branch and arrows. This is truly one of the many symbols of America, and whenever someone sees it, they immediately think of the USA.

The product design that I absolutely love is my iPhone 4. I love the sleekness of the iPhone the most. The combination of the glass back, brushed aluminum, and black color really make the design modern and sleek! In addition to how nice the design looks, the simplicity and shape make it really nice to hold and do work on. All in all, the design of the iPhone makes is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional and that's why I really like it.

While in Hastings the other day, I noticed that the movie cover for the "Avatar" uses Papyrus to spell out "Avatar." I thought this was really funny because I feel like Papyrus is always being knocked down by design gurus and graphic designers, but in this cases, one of the most successful movies of all time incorporates the type in their logo! I actually really like the font; however, I think the fact that it's so common takes away some creative points off anyone who uses it. I think like any typeface, there's definitely some times where Papyrus may actually be the BEST possible choice of font, but again, the fact that it's so common makes it less of a good choice.

In this advertisement, it shows Halley Berry looking sexy in a lake with her signature written on her back and a picture of her fragrance in the bottom right. The handwritten signature is placed there to give off a personal vibe to viewers of the advertisement. The handwriting in this advertisement works well because it adds that personal touch to the ad, without sacrificing the beauty of the ad. The graphic designer did a great job choosing the color of the signature, because it flows really well with the rest of the colors in the ad. Ultimately, I think this is a good advertisement for the perfume because it looks good, shows people the fragrance, and the person backing the perfume.

In this advertisement, it simply shows an attractive woman who's obviously in great shape, working out with the packaging  of the supplement, "Hydroxycut" right next to her. The connotative aspect of this ad is that if you take hydroxycut and work out, you will end up looking like the model in the advertisement.

This advertisement has shown to work very well in numerous cases because it like all fitness supplement advertisements use this method. By incorporating rapid physiological change combined with a good looking person, everyone thinks that if they were to do this supplement, they'll end up looking, or at least get as close to looking like the person in the advertisement, as humanly possible.
